🧠What’s the Real First Step in Buying a Home?

Hint: It’s not what you think.
If you’re thinking about buying your first home, you might assume the first step is speaking to a mortgage broker or scrolling Rightmove at midnight (we’ve all been there).
But here's the truth: The real first step isn’t financial - It’s mental.
Before you dive into numbers, viewings, or estate agents — you need to lay a stronger foundation.
1. Get Clear on Your Why
Buying a home isn’t just a transaction — it’s emotional.
Ask yourself:
Why do I want to buy now?
What’s driving this decision — pressure, plans, or pure desire?
Do I feel ready or just expected to?
Knowing your why will keep you grounded when things get overwhelming later (and they probably will).
2. Learn the Process (Before You’re in It)
The biggest stress point for most first-time buyers? Not knowing what’s coming next.
Start learning the stages now — before you're deep in legal jargon and last-minute decisions.
Even just knowing the basic flow:
→ Deposit
→ Mortgage in Principle
→ Viewing
→ Offer
→ Solicitor
→ Survey
→ Exchange
→ Completion
This can massively reduce anxiety.
3. Get a Snapshot of Your Finances
No pressure to know exact numbers yet — just look at where you’re starting from.
Ask yourself:
Do I have a deposit (or a plan to build one)?
Do I know roughly what I earn vs. what I spend?
Have I checked my credit report? (Spoiler: You totally should. Full blog coming next!)
This doesn’t have to be perfect — just honest.
4. Talk to Someone (Who Knows Their Stuff)
Not your best mate who bought in 2016.Not your uncle who thinks everyone should buy at auction. You need a calm, non-judgemental guide who knows the current market.
That could be:
A friendly mortgage broker
A trusted estate agent (👋 hi!)
Or yes — blogs like this one
Asking early doesn’t make you silly. It makes you smart.
Final Thoughts
So no — the first step isn’t a Rightmove scroll. It’s getting your head straight, your facts in order, and your intentions aligned.
From there? You’ll feel more confident, less stressed, and way more in control of your buying journey.
Let’s take it one step at a time. Your ladder’s waiting. 🪜
